Hainan Island International Film Festival

The Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF) is a major cultural festival organized under the guidance of the China Film Administration and jointly hosted by China Media Group (CMG) and the People's Government of Hainan Province. It aims to strengthen international film cultural exchanges and cooperation, promote the development of the film industry, and foster a thriving film creation environment.
HIIFF serves as an important cultural initiative and pioneering project in support of Hainan's construction as a Free Trade Port and a pilot Free Trade Zone with Chinese characteristics. Since its inception in 2018, the festival has successfully held multiple editions, attracting participants from around the globe.
The festival, held annually in Hainan, China, typically features a range of activities including the official opening ceremony, film screenings showcasing works from around the world, masterclasses by renowned filmmakers, and the closing ceremony and awards ceremony where the Golden Coconut Awards are presented to outstanding film projects and individuals.
The Golden Coconut Awards, the top honor of the festival, recognize excellence in filmmaking across various categories such as feature-length dramas, documentaries, and short films.
The design concept of the "Golden Coconut Award" trophy draws inspiration from the most representative plant and beach landscape of Hainan – the coconut tree and the shoreline. The main handshake section creatively incorporates the trunk of a coconut tree, emerging from grains of sparkling sand, symbolizing the natural growth of light and shadow from the depths of life. The top of the trophy features a cluster of robust leaf veins supporting a lush and verdant coconut leaf, representing the vigorous growth and thriving momentum of the second edition of the film festival. At the center of the tree crown, a coconut fruit emerges, signifying the award-winning works – the abundant fruits of the rooted creativity and relentless exploration of outstanding filmmakers both on and off-screen.
The 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival will be held in Sanya from December 4th to 10th, 2024.
