China Theatre Festival

The festival presents a wide array of theatrical genres, including traditional operas, contemporary plays, experimental performances, musicals, ballets, and children's theatre. Traditional operas, such as Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera, and Yue Opera, are highlights of the festival, showcasing their elaborate costumes, stylized movements, and distinctive vocal techniques.
The festival takes place in various cities across China, with major hubs like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou frequently hosting the event. It attracts renowned theatre companies, directors, and actors from all over the country, as well as international participants, fostering cross-cultural collaboration and understanding.

From November 8th to 27th, 2023, the 18th China Theatre Festival was held in Hangzhou. This year's festival brought together 34 selected plays and 1 specially invited play from 23 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions, covering 15 traditional opera genres such as Peking Opera, Shaanxi Opera, Shaoxing Opera, and Huangmei Opera, as well as theatrical art categories such as modern drama, musical theater, children's drama, and ballet, showcasing a diverse range of styles and a continuous succession of outstanding performances, fully embodying the flourishing of theatrical art and the passing on of traditions.
