The China Huabiao Film Awards originated as the Ministry of Culture's Outstanding Film Awards in China. In 1995, it was officially named the "China Huabiao Film Awards."  The name "Huabiao" is derived from the decorative palace columns found in China, particularly those in front of the Tiananmen Square, which symbolize authority, luck, balance, and solemnity.

The China Huabiao Film Awards, also known as the "Grand Prize of China Radio, Film, and Television - Film Huabiao Awards," is a Chinese film award hosted by the National Film Administration of China. Alongside the Golden Rooster Award and the Hundred Flowers Award, it is considered one of the three major film awards in mainland China, and its award ceremony is typically held in Beijing, China.

The China Huabiao Film Awards are funded by the government to reward outstanding film professionals, making it an incentive-based award that embodies the enthusiasm and strong support of the Party and the state for the film industry.

The China Huabiao Film Awards recognize outstanding achievements in Chinese cinema, including categories such as Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and many more. As of 2023, the awards ceremony presents a total of 11 awards. In 2005, the awarding ceremony was changed from once a year to once every two years.

The awards ceremony brings together film professionals, celebrities, and industry leaders to celebrate the best of Chinese cinema.
