China Theatre Plum Blossom Award
(May 8th to 23rd, 2023)
The China Theatre Plum Performance Award is the highest award in China's theatrical performing art, which is evaluated biennially to honor young and middle-aged theatrical actors who have made outstanding achievements in performing arts.
Founded in 1983, the Plum Blossom Award is named after the traditional Chinese saying, “the plum blossom’s fragrance comes from the bitter cold,” and is the first art award designed to recognize and reward outstanding young and middle-aged theater performers and to prosper and develop the theater industry.
Since the 14th session, it has been jointly sponsored by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the China Theatre Association.
The Plum Blossom Award has a wide range of nominations, covering 54 traditional opera genres such as Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera, as well as various performing arts forms including drama, opera, musical and dance drama, which fully reflects the comprehensiveness and inclusiveness of the Plum Blossom Award in the field of theatrical art.
By 2018, the Plum Blossom Award had been held for 28 times, recognizing 681 award-winning actors and actresses from 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the central government, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan, who come from 54 types of traditional operas, including Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera, and contemporary theater forms such as dramas, operas, musicals, and dance dramas. Known as the highest award in the field of Chinese theater performance, the Plum Blossom Award recognizes actors and actresses who are representatives and key members of various theatrical genres and have made significant contributions to the inheritance and development of China’s theater industry.
The final evaluation event of the 31st China Theater Plum Blossom Award was held in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macao from May 8th to 23rd, 2023.
