The first Shanghai International Film Festival was held on October 7, 1993, marking China's debut on the international film festival circuit. It is an annual film festival held in Shanghai, China.

 

The festival features a comprehensive program including competitive sections for feature films, documentaries, and short films, as well as retrospectives, special screenings, workshops, masterclasses, and industry forums.

 

The Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) features several prestigious awards that honor excellence in cinema. Here are the main awards presented during the festival:

 

Golden Goblet Award :

The Golden Goblet Award is the top honor of the Shanghai International Film Festival. It recognizes outstanding achievements in filmmaking across various categories, including Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and others.

This award is highly coveted by filmmakers worldwide and has become a benchmark for excellence in cinema.

 

Asian New Talent Award:

The Asian New Talent Award is designed to showcase and support emerging filmmakers from Asia. It recognizes outstanding debut or early works by Asian directors, providing a platform for them to gain international exposure and recognition.

 

Best Innovation Film Award (Hennessy Cup):

Introduced from the second festival, this award recognizes films that demonstrate innovation in storytelling, filmmaking techniques, or other aspects of cinema. It encourages filmmakers to experiment and push the boundaries of film art.

 

Short Film Awards:

SIFF also presents awards for short films, including both animation and live-action categories. These awards recognize excellence in short-form filmmaking and provide a platform for talented filmmakers to showcase their work.

 

Special Awards

In addition to the above-mentioned awards, SIFF may also present special awards to individuals or films that have made a significant contribution to cinema or to the festival itself. These awards can take various forms and may be tailored to recognize specific achievements or contributions.

 

Beyond the competitive aspect, the festival also fosters a sense of community and collaboration among its participants. It provides opportunities for filmmakers to connect with producers, distributors, and investors, facilitating the exchange of ideas and fostering new partnerships.

 

The 26th Shanghai International Film Festival kicked off on June 14th, 2024, and concluded on June 23rd, spanning a total of 10 days. The Golden Goblet Ceremony and the Golden Goblet Awards Presentation Ceremony was held at the Shanghai Grand Theatre on the evenings of June 15th and June 22nd, respectively. The global call for entries for this year's Shanghai International Film Festival commenced on December 15th, 2023, and by March 31st, over 3,300 entries from 105 countries and regions across five continents had been received for competition and exhibition. The theme of the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival is "City of Cinema."
