The Pingyao International Film Festival is an annual film festival held in the historic city of Pingyao, China. On March 16, 2017, the Pingyao International Film Exhibition, initiated by film director Jia Zhangke, was launched in Beijing.

It is a prestigious gathering of filmmakers, industry professionals, and moviegoers from around the world who come together to celebrate the art of filmmaking and engage in cultural exchange.

The festival showcases a diverse range of cinematic narratives, including both mainstream and independent films, through a comprehensive program that includes competitive sections for narrative and documentary films, special screenings, retrospectives, masterclasses, and industry forums. The festival aims to promote and recognize outstanding achievements in filmmaking and provide a platform for filmmakers to showcase their work, engage in dialogue with peers, and explore new avenues for collaboration and creativity.

The Pingyao International Film Festival is also dedicated to fostering cultural exchange and understanding. It hosts cultural events and exhibitions that showcase the rich history and traditions of Pingyao and China, while inviting international guests to share their own cultural perspectives. This helps to enrich the festival experience and deepen the connections between filmmakers and audiences from different backgrounds.

One of the highlights of the festival is the jury-selected competition, where a panel of esteemed filmmakers, critics, and industry experts selects the best films in various categories, awarding prizes that recognize excellence in direction, cinematography, screenplay, and more. This recognition serves as a testament to the talent and dedication of the filmmakers and offers a valuable opportunity for their work to reach wider audiences.

The 8th Pingyao International Film Festival unveiled the shortlist of films on September 5. Outstanding films from 22 countries and regions including China, France, Portugal, Brazil, Uruguay, Italy, Mexico, Japan, Argentina, Colombia, Denmark, and the United States will be exhibited in the cinema palace in Pingyao later this month. The festival will be held from September 24 to 30.
