Situated at the tip of Lujiazui in the Pudong New Area and by the side of the Huangpu River, Shanghai Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower is a famous landmark in Shanghai and one of the most popular and widely known images of China internationally. Since its completion and opening to the public in 1994, it has witnessed the construction and development of Shanghai and China over the past three decades.

Shanghai Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower (hereinafter referred to as "Oriental Pearl") stands at the tip of Lujiazui in the Pudong New Area and by the side of the Huangpu River. Built on October 1,1994, it is one of the landmark buildings in Shanghai, integrating urban sightseeing, fashionable catering, shopping and entertainment and other functions. As of 2019, it is the sixth tallest tower in Asia and the ninth tallest tower in the world.

Known as Shanghai's most famous landmark building, the tower was named the first batch of China's 5A-level national tourist attraction. The designer, inspired by a line in a popular poem in China's Tang Dynasty, imaginatively connects 11 spheres of various sizes and scattered heights from the blue sky to the green grass. The harmonious entity of the tower presents an imaginary picture of “pearls, large and small, dropping onto a plate of jade” — a poetic and artistic image that originated with the poet.
