The 165-meter Expo Thermometer
#ExploreShanghai
The 165-meter Expo Thermometer, the highest meteorological signal tower in the world, is located in the Puxi Expo Park along the Huangpu River.
Few first-time passersby notice the meteorological signal tower above Zhongshan East Second Road in Shanghai. In fact, this seemingly insignificant Atonobo-style historical building, constructed in the late 1890s, boasted many historical firsts in its time.
As one of the oldest signal towers in the Asia-Pacific region, it was once hailed as the “highest tower in the Far East” as well as one of the first historical buildings on the Bund to be entirely relocated for protection. Today, the first floor of the tower has been converted into an exhibition hall sharing the history of the Bund through display of photos, text and replicas to kindle images of the old waterfront district. A café on the second floor and observation deck on the third floor have yet to open to the public.
