At the junction of Xinle Road and Xiangyang North Road in Shanghai stands a milky-white Russian-style church.
Built in the first half of the 20th century, the Orthodox Church boasts a simple but impressive architectural structure. The gilded domes of the church’s five sapphire onion spires offset the red sloped roofs below, creating an exotic appeal. The interior is also mainly milky-white.
On the ceiling of the main dome are nine religious oil painting murals. They were sealed for nearly half a century and only brought to light again after a long renovation and restoration. The antique murals emit a sense of tranquility and remind people of the church’s past glory.
