Does it make you feel awkward to ask a question to someone whose status is lower than your own?
Confucius believed that one should never pretend to know anything that one does not know, and should consult others whenever necessary. He also held that one should turn to whoever knows the answer for advice, regardless of their status, capacity and age. For this reason, Confucius took an ask-whenever-in-doubt attitude in learning. Once he was in the Ancestral Hall of Lu, and kept asking about everything, for which he was derided for being ignorant of the rituals. He, however, retorted, “This is just what the rituals require.”
