For a Painting of Ume Blossoms

Author: Li Fangyin (1695-1755)

The last brush stroke is just done and the watercolor still wet.

These few ume blossoms outshine the rest of the picture.

May the wind carry their beauty to faraway places!

Then every household will become spring despite the laws of nature.

Li was a Qing Dynasty artist who featured ume blossoms, orchids, bamboo plants and pine trees most frequently in his paintings. His unconventional way of the presentation made him one of the so-called “eight oddballs from Yangzhou” among his peers.

This poem is not about the specific image of ume blossoms on paper, but expresses the pride, joy and beautiful wishes of this ume painter.
