A Midnight Song about Seasonal Changes
A folk song during the North and South Dynasties (420-589)
The ice on the lake thickens to three feet;
The snow on the road extends to a thousand miles.
My heart prevails like pines and cypresses.
What’s your love like while snow piles?
This is a folk song selected from a collection of poems that are arranged into four sections for the four seasons. The collection was considered to be composed by an eponymously named woman “Lady Midnight” in the Jin Dynasty.
This folk song uses the image of pines and cypresses that never wither in the cold of the year to express the heroine’s loyalty to love. At the same time, it reveals her hidden concern about her partner’s change of mind.
