Inscription on an Ink Bamboo Painting

by Wang Shen

Dusk clouds form a misty veil over the Xiao and Xiang,

No soul in sight: midst distant green fronds only a sun on decline.

Boat docked at the pier, travelers bed overnight at the Temple.

Twixt occasional spring rains, listening to a partridge warble.

Born in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, Wang Shen (1360-1400) was a famous poet of the early Ming Dynasty. As a scholar at the Imperial College, he devoted his life to academic study.

In the poem, Xiao and Xiang are the rivers in Hunan Province abound with bamboo rooted among rocks. The "green fonds" is a reference to bamboo leaves.
