Drunken Bamboo

by Yan Shu

Lush they grow by the River Wei,

Neat and fresh in an unreal way.

Not for taming they must be.

Why else plant on Drunken Bamboo Day?

Chinese in the old days planted bamboo on the 13th day of the 5th moon, known as Druken Bamboo Day, believing that bamboo fell into a dormant state of slow growth (“drunken") and that bamboo transplanted that day had a higher survival rate.

Yan Shu (991-1055) was a statesman and a famous essayist, poet and prose writer of the Northern Song Dynasty.
