Answering a Question in the Mountains

Author: Li Bai (701-762)

People ask me why I lead a hermit’s life in the green mountains.

With my heart at ease, I smile silently.

Peach blossoms jump into the creek and casually swim away.

This is another world beyond everything earthly.

Li is nicknamed “poetry god” in Chinese history for his amazing ability to compose a poem within a few minutes, as well as the ethereal charms of his poems. He was a romantic in his view of life and in his verse.

This is a seven-character quatrain, which shows the free and optimistic spirit of the author in his reclusive life through a pattern of question-and-answer and allusion.
