A Celebration on Ice and Snow, Beijing 2022: Bobsleigh
The sport of bobsleigh originated in Switzerland as an evolution of sledding. A bobsleigh can be driven by one or more riders. It is a speed race that takes place on an ice track with curves.
Bobsleigh competitions are held in four race heats with the fastest total time determining the winner. The starting order for the first race heat is determined by the draw rules of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF), and the remaining heats’ starting order is based on the results of previous heats. The four events at the Beijing 2022 Games will be 4-man bobsleigh, 2-man bobsleigh, 2-woman bobsleigh and women’s mono bob.
A bobsleigh can run up at an average speed of 100 kilometres per hour, and the fastest can reach 140. The lightning-fast speed is something not to be missed at a competition. Spectators are known to use horns, percussion boards, gongs and drums to cheer for their favourite athletes. It is a thrilling and entertaining sport!
