The Timeless Legacy of Fenjiu: A Pillar of Chinese Baijiu Culture
China has a brewing history of several thousand years. 6,000 years ago, the prehistoric civilization in China had already mastered the technique of fermentation. Fenjiu from Shanxi Province is one of the most historic alcoholic beverages in China, with a history dating back to 3000 BC, and is hailed as the "living fossil of Chinese wine culture".
The exact origin of the name "Fenjiu" remains to be further verified. However, as early as over 1,400 years ago, there was already a wine name called "Fenqing" in this area. 1,500 years ago during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Fenjiu was highly praised by Emperor Wucheng of the Northern Qi Dynasty as a court wine and was recorded in the Twenty-Four Histories, which made Fenjiu famous overnight. The Xinghua Village mentioned in the poems of Du Mu, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty, is still the place where Fenjiu is produced today.
1,500 years ago, the first batch of "clear liquor" was produced here; 1,300 years ago, the solid-state fermentation production process was invented here; 800 years ago, the distillation brewing technique was invented here. Fenjiu is not only famous in Shanxi, but also sold throughout the country. What is most remarkable is that the brewers here traveled all over the country to spread their techniques, combining them with local environments to produce various characteristic white spirits. The world-renowned Maotai was developed by people from Shanxi in Guizhou.
In 1915, Fenjiu won the top gold medal at the Panama World's Fair, which was the only highest award among Chinese Baijiu brands, fulfilling Mr. Yang Deling's aspiration of "revitalizing national liquor". After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Fenjiu started from the high point of being the first national banquet wine and consecutively won the title of National Famous Liquor for five terms. It has always adhered to honest operation and truthful promotion.
Fenjiu has long been a representative Chinese liquor. The spirit of serving the country, honesty, innovation, openness, tenacity and perseverance has been passed down and adhered to, which is a concentrated embodiment of the core spirit of Chinese wine culture. The spirit of Fenjiu is the core spirit of Chinese liquor and is known as the "soul of Chinese baijiu".
