Photographer's Journey: Capturing Beijing's Vibrant Spring Festival (Winter Swim)
A Beijing Local's Welcome to the Year of the Dragon
There's an old saying in Beijing that when the spring season begins, the ice starts to melt. And indeed, the very next day after the beginning of spring, all the ice skating rinks in Beijing close. But that doesn't mean the locals stop having fun on the water. One such local, a man well over 70 years old, braved the cold temperatures and took to the water at Shichahai, engaging in physical activities for over half an hour. Dozens of people gathered to watch, some even commenting on how he hadn't jumped into the water yet. I couldn't take it anymore and said, "If you're so brave, why don't you jump in yourself?" The old man replied, "To welcome the Year of the Dragon, one must be like a dragon." And with that, he dove into the icy water, performing a breathtaking dive known as "The Dragon Crossing the Mighty Gate". Well then, his words will be stayed with me for a whole year.
