Fairmont Peace Hotel, the most impressive mix of the traditional and the cosmopolitan
Shanghai, the host city of the ongoing 4th China International Import Expo, boasts an impressive mix of the traditional and the cosmopolitan. Fairmont Peace Hotel, located on the waterfront of the Huangpu River, is the most legendary edifice on the Bund. Opened in 1929 as the luxurious Cathay Hotel, this building has a striking Art Deco facade and an iconic green copper dome. The hotel overlooks the stunning natural beauty of the Bund and Yu Garden.
Of the many legendary buildings in the Bund, the Peace Hotel is among the most storied. Situated at one end of Nanjing Pedestrian Street, it was one of the first modern buildings completed in Shanghai. It survived World War II, experienced the liberation of Shanghai and hosted some important historical peace talks.
Entering the hotel through its oak revolving door and standing beneath the old bronze chandelier is like a trip back in time. The hotel’s famous Nine-Nation Suite has hosted numerous celebrities including distinguished generals and eminent writers. The balcony restaurant in the Cathay Room is also a must visit, where one can enjoy the stunning skyline of the Bund while having brunch.
