Hebei Bangzi Opera has four types of roles. Male roles with painted faces are noted for their singing, posture and performance of martial arts. Some wear variegated faces. All these roles attach importance to singing. A unique male role in Hebei Bangzi Opera wears a unicolor face and a white false beard, but sings and chants in a way similar to that of a painted-face male role. Examples are Xiao En in Celebrating the Pearl on Top of a Hat, Wang Yun in Clapping Hands Three Times and Wu She in Jumping into a Pot of Boiling Oil. The male martial role attaches importance to poses and movements. It has three subdivisions, including one wearing a variegated painted face.
